The Teachings of Ajahn Suchart.

“Once the mind knows how to do it, the mind will always be radiant with happiness and blissfulness.”
Nun: “My father had a pulse implanted in the heart to make his heart pumping and it can make one difficult to die. So my father had a painful death. They gave him morphine. I think that’s like a drug and at that moment the citta is drugged and that can cause complication.”
Than Ajahn: “Your citta is not drugged by the drug. It’s just your body which is drugged.
Your citta is drugged by your delusion. Then, you have to use the Dhamma medicine which is mindfulness and wisdom. If you have mindfulness and wisdom, regardless of the condition of the body, it cannot affect the mind.
Like the minds of the Buddha and the noble disciples, they are always radiant, even at the time of death and under the extreme pain. As far as the mind with the Dhamma is concerned, the pain of the body is just minimal . The mind with the Dhamma can handle all kinds of extreme pain of the body.
Each individual mind has to train himself or herself to be able to cope with this extreme pain. This is something that no one can do for other’s mind. That’s why when we meditate, we try to sit for a long time and let the pain arises and ceases by itself. If we can do this, then the pain will not be able to affect our mind. To be able to do this, no one can help one another. We can teach the person how to do it but the person who is afflicted by the pain has to do it himself.
Like the Buddha who taught his father when his father was on his dying bed and the Buddha taught him until his father became enlightened. His father could rise above the pain and death on his own. His mind was not affected by the pain or by the death of the body.
This is how you can help others, by teaching the Dhamma.
You should just let your father be. It’s aniccaṁ, dukkhaṁ, anattā. It’s beyond your control.
It’s beyond your ability to do anything. If it can be done, then the Buddha could help all of us to pass on peacefully and happily. But he cannot. The Buddha can only teach us how to do it. We have to do it ourselves.
That’s why we come and learn the Dhamma. We study the Dhamma. We listen to Dhamma talks. We read Dhamma books. So we know how to teach the mind to cope with all types of suffering of the body, like ageing, sickness, pain, and separation. Once the mind knows how to do it, the mind will always be radiant with happiness and blissfulness. It will not be affected by the ageing, sickness, death or separation of the body.”
