“When your mindfulness becomes stronger than your defilements, your defilements will not be able to oppose you.”
- - -
Question: I have been observing mindfulness closely but it seems that kilesas are getting fiercer and they arise more suddenly during sleep. What should I do?
Tahn Ajahn: It means that your mindfulness is not strong enough. When you start to control your mind, your defilements (kilesas) will react stronger than normal. It’s considered as a normal process. As soon as you start to control your mind, your defilements will start to oppose you. So, you have to persevere. And try to keep developing mindfulness.
Eventually, when your mindfulness becomes stronger than your defilements, your defilements will not be able to oppose you. But in the beginning, it is a normal process that as soon as you start to control your mind, the defilements (kilesas) react strongly.
