“If you have strong mindfulness, you might be able to resist your desire without having to go into samādhi.”

The teachings of Ajahn Suchart.

“If you have strong mindfulness, you might be able to resist your desire without having to go into samādhi.”

Upāsikā:  Sometimes I found that the kilesa is very strong. For example, when I come out of the peaceful stage, suddenly my mind thinks, ‘I want a cup of coffee’. It is really ridiculous because it was very calm and peaceful and all of a sudden this wanting for a cup of coffee arises.”

Than Ajahn:  “Your peacefulness and calmness disappear because of the desire for a cup of coffee. It destroys your peacefulness. The only way to fix it is by going back to your meditation instead of having a cup of coffee. It is because when you get your cup of coffee, you’ll feel good for a while. After that, the desire for another cup will arise. So, instead of having a cup of coffee, you should resist it by going back into your meditation.

If you have strong mindfulness, you might be able to resist your desire without having to go into samādhi.

But if you cannot resist it using mindfulness, then you might have to go into samādhi.”
