The Teachings of Ajahn Suchart.
4 May 2024
Question: The concept gets a little bit complicated as I am learning the different levels of jhāna, the terms used to describe how we build up mind power and use it.
Than Ajahn: Don’t worry too much about the description. You should worry more about how to get to the real thing which is mindfulness. Mindfulness will take you to the real thing.
When you get to the real thing, you’ll find out that it doesn’t have a name. You’ll just have a feeling, i.e. feeling good, feeling calm and peaceful. That’s all. It’s only when we communicate, and when we want to tell others what it is, then we need a name, we need to put a label on it.
But when you practice, you don’t need to know all those terms.
It’s like going to a restaurant. You don’t need to know the name of the food you’d like to eat.
You can just tell the chef the kind of food you’d like to have and tell the chef that you don’t know the name of the food but you know how it tastes like and how it looks like.
So don’t get distracted by trying to learn all the terms. Try to learn one thing, i.e. how to be mindful, that’s all. And everything will fall into its place.
