“To have samādhi, you use mindfulness; to attain purity, you use insight. If you use wisdom it cannot regress, but if you use mindfulness, it can regress.”

The teachings of Ajahn Suchart.

“To have samādhi, you use mindfulness; to attain purity, you use insight. If you use wisdom it cannot regress, but if you use mindfulness, it can regress.”

Question:  Is it true that once we regress we will not have samādhi again and how can we have the chance to go higher?

Than Ajahn:  Samādhi is still at the level of aniccā, and it can regress. You have to maintain mindfulness, maintain the samādhi, because if you stop, after a while, you will lose that ability to enter into samādhi.

For a Sotāpanna, the level in which one attains is by way of vipassanā or wisdom. A Sotāpanna can protect the mind from regressing. To have samādhi, you use mindfulness; to attain purity, you use insight.

If you use wisdom it cannot regress, but if you use mindfulness, it can regress. When you don’t maintain your mindfulness, you let your mind think about things then your mind becomes restless and agitated again.
