Question: Is it possible for a meditator to achieve samādhi or nibbāna while doing mettā meditation?*
Than Ajahn: Mettā meditation is used more to get rid of your anger. Anger is a hindrance to your meditation practice. When you’re still angry at someone, when you meditate, you cannot focus on your breath, or on your mantra. So, you should use mettā bhāvanā to eliminate your anger first by saying, ‘I forgive you. Whatever things you did, I would not take any revenge. I forgive you.’ Eventually, your anger will disappear. Once your anger disappears, you have to go back to use the regular meditation object, using the breath or a mantra to bring the mind to full concentration. Other meditation objects are used to stop the defilements that cause the mind to be restless or agitated.
