The teachings of Ajahn Suchart.

Question:  Who controls the thoughts? Who is getting rid of the thoughts to calm the mind?

Than Ajahn:  The mind itself. The mind is the one who knows. The mind uses mindfulness to control the thought. Most of the time, we don’t use our mindfulness enough. We leave the thoughts alone. Those thoughts are the ones that direct our lives. And those thoughts are usually driven by our defilements and delusion. They lead us to more suffering and pain.

That’s why we have to develop mindfulness to stop this delusion from leading us to the wrong direction.

Once we can stop the thoughts from going towards the wrong direction, the next step is to direct the thoughts to go towards the right direction. The right direction is to see that everything is impermanent.

Everything is hurtful to the mind.

Everything is not under the mind’s control. So, it’s better to leave everything alone. We shouldn’t have any desire to possess it.

Because once you possess it, your possession can hurt you when it changes from good to bad.

Question:  To whom this mind belongs to?

Than Ajahn:  The mind doesn’t belong to anything. It’s just a condition or a natural occurrence like the rain, the sun, the wind and the water.
