Question: Sometimes I have doubt in the teachings of the Buddha or with my teacher. How can I manage for me not to have doubt anymore?
Than Ajahn: You can get rid of your doubt by studying more about the teachings of the Buddha. You still haven’t covered the teachings enough to properly understand them. Your doubt arises from the lack of information. You can get rid of your doubt entirely by practicing i.e. by studying, by talking to an enlightened person who can help you getting rid of your doubt.
If you study on your own by reading from books or learning from an unenlightened teacher, you might not be able to get rid of your doubt. It’s because it takes someone who is enlightened to explain to you all the things that you are doubtful about.

Question: How to be sure that the teacher is an enlightened person?
Than Ajahn: Well, you have to look for an enlightened person like you are looking for diamonds. There are diamonds somewhere and you need to go and look for them. The way to look for them is by start asking other people about them, ‘Do you know any good teachers?’ then, people will recommend you this teacher and that teacher. You can ask more people to see if you get the same information. And if you think that the person is a good teacher, someone whom you’re looking for, the next step is to go and meet him and listen to his teachings to see if he can help you. Then, you might be able to get rid of your doubt. If he is not the right teacher, you may have to look for someone else.
