What is the Maha Chakrapat Gatha?
Different monks are known to have composed different 'Gāthās' or sacred verses. For example, Somdej Toh is famously associated with the Chinnabanchorn (Jinapanjara) Gatha.
The Chakrapat Gatha was recommended by Luangpu Doo to enhance one's chanting with the Buddha Dhamma's great power. The term 'Maha Chakrapat' refers to a Universal Monarch, and Maitreya Bodhisatta will be reborn many times as a Universal Emperor before his final birth, when he will attain enlightenment. This may not have been the original name of this mysterious and powerful Gatha, but most Thais now recognise this Gatha by this name.
Luangpu Doo is believed by the local Thais and his disciples to be an incarnation of Maitreya Bodhisatta. Currently, he is sitting on the throne in Tusita Heaven as the ruler of that realm, Deva King Santusita. During that time, he will occassionally reincarnate on Earth to serve as a monk and help protect the Buddha Sasana, cultivate affinities with those who seek the Dhamma, as well as people who have had been his disciple or relative in one of his past lives. This means that having read this, you probably have a karmic link with Luangpu Doo if not you would not come across this article. Luangpu Doo is only one of the many incarnations of Maitreya Bodhisatta, others include Budai Heshang (a fat jolly monk holding a large sack) and Luangpu Thuad.
The Chakrapat Prayer is composed using Pali (albeit with a heavy Thai interpretation / intonation) since Pali is the sacred language of the Theravada School of Buddhism. The meaning of the prayer is as follows:
Na-Mo-Put-Ta-Ya means all 5 Buddhas in this eon ("Pattara Kub" = the period of time between the beginning to the end of the current world) named Kakusantho, Konakom, Kassapa, Gotama, and Sri-ariya-mettaya (Maitreya)
Pra-Put-Ta-Tray-Rat-Ta-Na-Yan means the Triple Gems, Buddhist precepts, meditation, and wisdom.
Ma-Nee-Nop-Pa-Rat means 7 emperor's treasures i.e. a Chakkar (a discus or wheel), an elephant, a horse, a warlord, a quaestor (a lord high treasurer), a majestic female supporter, and jewels.
Si-Sa-Hus-Sa-Su-Thum-Ma: Si-Sa means thoughts, Hus-sa means Hands (Action); all of these means both thinking and acting lead breakthrough in three worlds (heaven, earth and hell).
Put-Tho, Thum-Mo, Sung-Ko means Buddhas, the Dhamma (his teachings),and the Sanghas (the Buddhist clergy).
Ya-Tha-Put-Mo-Na means the fifth Buddha (Sri-ariya-mettaya or Maitreya) who will emerge in the world in the future (This is an ancient way to author a mantra.).
Put-Ta-Bu-Cha, Thum-Ma-Bu-Cha, Sung-Ka-Bu-Cha means salutation of Buddhas, the Dhamma (his teachings),and the Sangha (the Buddhist clergy).
Uk-Kee-Tha-Nung, Wa-Rung-Kan-Thung means such salutation with incenses, candles, perfume and flowers and asking for the wisdom to burn out and destroy lust and unbridled desires.
Is-Wa-Lee-Ja-Ma-Ha-The-Rung means worship of the Buddhist saint named Sivalee who is always prominent in fortune, luck, wealth in business or careers.
Ar-Hung-Wan-Ta-Mi-Tu-Ra-Tho, Ar-Hung-Wan-Ta-Mi-Tha-Thu-Yo, Ar-Hung-Wan-Ta-Mi-Sub-Pa-So, Put-Tha-Tham-Ma-Sung-Ka-Pu-Che-Mi means worship of all related auspicious Buddhist things.
The Maha Chakrapat Buddha is actually the Bodhisatta wearing the costume of the Universal Emperor, and symbolises the greatest of both the secular (as a Universal King) and the Dhamma (as the next Buddha-to-be), and thus will bring blessings to both our everyday life as well as our Dhamma practice. Luangpu Doo used the Maha Chakrapat Gatha to bless all of his amulets, and passed on the practice to his main disciple Luangta Ma. Luangta currently invites his teacher Luangpu Doo in the form of Santusita Deva to help bless the current batches of amulets.
The Maha Chakrapat prayer is able to summon the power and parami of all Buddhas and Bodhisattas to the chanter, to bless him or her with all good things, whether they are material or spiritual. Every day at 8.30pm (Thai time), Luangta and all his disciples will chant the Maha Chakrapat Gatha at this time because Luangpu Doo in Tusita Heaven will be using his great meritorious power to connect and bless the 3 Worlds (from the Hell Realms, to the Human and Heavenly Realms).
Breathe calmly and normally, while chanting the Chakrapat Gatha as you picture in your mind Luangpu Doo, Luangpu Thuad or the Maha Chakrapat Buddha. As your connection with Luangpu Doo strengthens, he will be able to assist you in times of need.
