“For those who do good kammas, they become angels or devas. If you can meditate and calm your mind, go to another realm of existence – the Brahma realm.”

The Teaching of Ajahn Suchart.

“For those who do good kammas, they become angels or devas. If you can meditate and calm your mind, go to another realm of existence – the Brahma realm.”

Question:  What actually are heaven and hell when we passed away?

Than Ajahn:  When you pass away, your physical body disappears, but your spiritual body still exists. The spiritual body will experience the fruit of your kamma. If it has a bad kamma, your spiritual body will experience bad feelings. There are different kinds of bad feelings: bad feelings that arise from hunger, bad feelings that arise from fear, bad feelings that arise from hatred. These are different kinds of bad feelings which you’ve accumulated while you’re still a human being. Your kamma will determine for the mind to go to different levels of existence.

There are four lower planes of existence: the animal realm, the hungry ghost realm, the fearful ghost realm, and the hell realm. These are the four bad realms for people who did bad kammas.

For those who do good kammas, they become angels or devas, and the intensity of happiness they experience varies from the amount of good kammas they’ve done. The more good kammas, the more happiness they will experience. The happiness is also divided into different levels of happiness – different realms. And if you can meditate and calm your mind, you’ll go to another realm of existence called, ‘the rūpa and arūpa realm’ – the Brahma realm.

The devas, the humans, and the animals, exist in the sensual realm of existence. They rely on the sensual experiences to make them happy. In Brahma realm, they don’t rely on the sensual experiences to make them happy, they rely on the calming of the mind using samādhi, using mindfulness.  The calmer the mind, the higher Brahma realm that they become.

If you have vipassanā, your mind will get rid of the causes of your suffering which are three desires: the desire for sensual pleasures, the desire for becoming, and the desire for not becoming. Then, you will have less suffering and will have more happiness. The vipassanā are divided into four levels.

The first level, you get rid of some of your desires, you become a Sotāpanna.

The second level, you get rid of more desire, and you become a Sakadāgāmī.

Then third level, you become an Anāgāmī.

The fourth level, you become an Arahant. The more desire that you can get rid of, the higher vipassanā level you become. These are all happening in the mind, in the spiritual body.
