“Equanimity arises from the practice of samādhi and the application of insight.”

Question: Is the purpose of practicing Buddhism to be equanimous in whatever happens, good or bad?

Than Ajahn: That’s right. That’s the goal. It’s to let go of everything, good or bad, and not to be attached to anything. Because once you’re attached, it can cause your mind to become anxious which is caused by the things you come into contact with.

If you are in contact with good thing, you are anxious that it might leave you. If you come in contact with bad thing, you become afraid. But if you can train your mind to remain neutral, then your mind will be peaceful and calm in every situation. Equanimity arises from the practice of samādhi and the application of insight. You use both.
