The Teaching of Ajahn Suchart.

The Teaching of Ajahn Suchart.

Question:  Do I observe the mind when I come out of samādhi meditation (when my mind is calm)?

Than Ajahn:  When you have mindfulness, you will eventually observe the mind all the time, from the time you get up to the time you go to sleep. You’ll never abandon observing your mind because your mind is the culprit of all your problems. So, if you abandon observing it, if you allow the mind to go freely, it will cause you a lot of problems.

You have to observe the mind all the time. But when you start, you don’t have strong enough mindfulness to observe the mind yet, so you observe other thing that is easier to observe like observing your body as the basis for developing mindfulness. Once you have strong mindfulness, you will be able to observe the mind. When you can’t see the mind yet, then you have to observe the body because the body is the extension of the mind. Whatever the body does is what the mind tells it to do.

When you keep watching the body, you are indirectly watching the mind because the mind is the one that tells the body what to do. So, you watch the body. Make sure that it doesn’t do anything bad.
